These terms apply to every order you place on this website, and to orders and quotes we agree with you in other ways. Please read them before you order. If you are buying as a consumer (not for a business), some of these terms apply differently, as explained below, and nothing in them affects your legal rights as a consumer.
1. About us
We are Scribes Digital Print Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 09484628, at 48 Lincoln Street, Hull, HU2 0PB. VAT number 916 511 831. You can contact us by email at [email protected], by phone on 01482 341927, or through the contact form on this website.
2. Your account
You need an account to order. Please keep your password safe and your details up to date. You’re responsible for orders placed through your account. New accounts confirm their email address before their first order.
We want everyone who deals with us to be treated with respect, and that includes our team. We may suspend or close an account at any time, and decline further orders, if it is misused: for example, if our services are abused, claims are made that aren’t genuine, or our team is spoken to in an abusive or threatening way. Any orders already paid for and not yet started will be refunded. Accounts not used for 5 years are closed.
Your account is there to make ordering from us easier. It isn’t a storage service, so please keep your own copies of your files and records. We may close an account, or remove information from it that we no longer need, at any time. If we do, we’ll keep only what the law asks us to (such as invoices), and we’ll refund anything you’ve paid for that we haven’t started.
3. Ordering
- We take orders through this website only (or as agreed with us in a quote). We can’t take orders in person at our shop, as our ordering and production are automated (see “How your order is made” below).
- When you place an order, you’re offering to buy the items in it. The contract between us starts when we confirm your order by email.
- We can refuse an order, for example if a price on the website is clearly wrong or we can’t print what you’ve asked for. If we do, we’ll tell you and refund anything you’ve paid.
- Please check your order carefully before you place it: the product, size, material, options, quantity and turnaround are printed exactly as you choose them.
Choosing the right product
- Unless a product’s description says it’s suitable for outdoor use (for example, weatherproof, waterproof or for outdoor use), it’s designed for indoor use. Please read the description before you order, and use each product only in the way it’s designed to be used.
- We’re always happy to help you choose. Any advice we give is general guidance about our products, based only on what you tell us. We can’t know how, where or for how long you plan to use something unless you tell us, and we won’t always ask about things that may seem obvious. If it matters, please tell us when you ask, in writing (for example, by email or the contact form): where it will be used (indoors or outdoors), for how long, and anything else it will need to stand up to, such as wind, rain, sun or heavy handling.
- Choosing the right product is your decision. We can’t be responsible if a product isn’t suitable for a use, place or conditions you didn’t tell us about, or that it isn’t designed for (for example, an indoor product used outdoors). This includes damage from weather, such as wind or rain.
- If you’re a consumer, this doesn’t affect your legal rights: if you tell us the particular purpose you need a product for and rely on our advice, the product should be fit for that purpose.
How your order is made
Our ordering and production are automated, using some of the latest print technology. Your files are passed automatically from our website into our production queue, and our systems prepare them for printing. This speeds up production and keeps our prices down.
- In most cases our team don’t handle or open your files: once your order is placed, or your artwork is approved, it goes into the production queue and is processed straight away.
- Because of this, we can’t accept changes to an order or its artwork by email, social media, phone or any other way of contacting us. Please make sure your order and your files are right before you send them.
- If you chose a file check or a proof, you can send a new file through the website until you approve it (see section 5). After that, the order is printed as approved.
4. Prices and payment
- Prices are shown without VAT, with the VAT added shown alongside. Delivery is charged as shown at the checkout. Collection from our shop is free.
- You pay when you order, by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal. Businesses with a credit account with us must pay each invoice within 30 days of the date of the invoice, strictly. We may stop orders on account while an invoice is overdue.
- Your invoice is emailed with your order confirmation, and is in My Account.
- If we find a mistake in a price after you’ve ordered, we’ll contact you before printing. You can then go ahead at the correct price or cancel for a full refund.
5. Your artwork
- You’re responsible for your artwork: its content, spelling, grammar, layout, size and colours. Please read our Artwork guide. The best files are PDFs at the finished size, in CMYK colours, with images at least 300 dpi and 3 mm of bleed where the design goes to the edge.
- You choose an Artwork Check for each item:
- Just Print: your file goes straight into production and is printed exactly as you send it, with no checks.
- Basic File Check: our system checks your file automatically (see below). If everything passes, we email you to say so and it goes straight into production. If it finds something, we email you the results to approve, or you can send a new file.
- File Check with Proof: the same automatic check, plus a digital proof showing how your file will print, which you approve or decline on our website before we print.
What the automatic file check looks at
- The file: that it’s a type we can print from (a PDF is best; JPG, PNG and TIFF are also accepted), that it opens, and that it isn’t damaged or protected with a password.
- Pages: that the file has the number of pages the item needs (for example, two for a double-sided leaflet).
- Size and shape: that the page matches the size you ordered, either way round (portrait or landscape), and whether it will need to be enlarged, reduced or fitted. For booklets, that it’s the way round you ordered, so it’s bound on the right edge.
- Bleed: that a design going to the edge has enough bleed (usually 3 mm), and that the background is carried out to the edge of the page, so no thin white edge shows after trimming.
- Safe area: that no text or detail is so close to the edge that it could be trimmed off.
- Pictures: that photos and pictures are sharp enough at the printed size (300 ppi is best; 150 ppi for large items such as posters and banners).
- Colour: whether the file uses screen colours (RGB). These are converted to print colours (CMYK), and some bright colours may print a little duller than on screen.
- Fonts: that the fonts are embedded in a PDF, so the text prints in the right font.
Some things will stop a file being printed (for example, a file that won’t open, missing fonts or very low-resolution pictures): you’ll need to send a new file. Others are warnings you can accept or fix. A file our system can’t check automatically (for example, a very large file or an Illustrator or Photoshop file) is checked by our team instead.
The check looks at how your file will print. It doesn’t check spelling, grammar, wording, font sizes, design or whether the content is right: those are always your responsibility.
Our checks are about printing, not design. A file check or a proof is a short check that your file will print well. It isn’t a design service, so we don’t change your wording, fonts, layout or pictures, and we don’t rebuild or correct artwork. If the check finds something that won’t print well, we’ll tell you (or you’ll see it in your proof), and you’ll need to send new artwork through the website.
- If your artwork isn’t quite the right size or shape for the item, it may be scaled to fit as best it can. With a proof, you’ll see how it will fit before you approve it.
- Everything in your file is printed as it is. For example, text or pictures too close to the edge may be trimmed off, and a screenshot or a photo of a screen prints with its blur and anything else it shows.
- When you approve a proof, or choose Just Print, you accept the artwork as it is. We can’t be responsible for mistakes in artwork you’ve approved or sent to print as it was.
- Production starts when your artwork is approved. If you choose to upload your artwork later, we’ll remind you, and the turnaround starts once it arrives and is approved.
- You confirm that you have the right to print everything in your artwork, and that it isn’t unlawful, offensive or in breach of anyone else’s rights (such as copyright or trademarks). You agree to cover our costs if a claim is made against us because of your artwork. We can refuse to print anything we believe breaks these rules.
6. Colour, size and finishing
- Colours on screen and on home printers look different from colours printed on a press, and colours can vary slightly between print runs and between different papers. We print to industry standards, but we can’t guarantee an exact colour match.
- Trimming can vary by up to 3 mm, which is why bleed and a safe margin for text matter: keep text and important details at least 3 mm inside the trim edge.
- Folding thick papers can cause slight cracking along the fold. Where a product is creased first, this is kept to a minimum.
7. Quantities
- Printing and finishing need a little spare, so you’ll usually receive a few more than you ordered (often around 10 extra). There’s no charge for these.
- Now and then an order may be slightly short. Small overs and unders like these are normal in printing, are accepted as part of the order, and aren’t charged for or refunded.
- Variable data printing (for example, numbered tickets or items personalised with different names or details) is the exception: you’ll receive exactly the quantity you ordered.
8. Turnaround, collection and delivery
- Turnaround is counted in working days (Monday to Friday, not bank holidays) from when your artwork is approved. Orders approved before the daily cut-off time count that day. The dates shown on the website are estimates, not guarantees.
- Collection: we’ll email you when your order is ready to collect. You can then collect it from 48 Lincoln Street, Hull, from 15 minutes after we open until 15 minutes before we close (9:15am to 4:45pm on a normal day). We can’t hand over orders outside these times.
- Opening hours: our opening hours are shown on this website. We may sometimes need to change them at short notice, for example for staff training or machine maintenance, and we’ll show any change on this website. Please check it before you come to collect: opening times shown elsewhere online may not be up to date.
- Delivery: we send your order by courier, and email you a tracking link when it leaves us. Once it’s with the courier, delays (for example, from bad weather, traffic or nobody being in) are out of our control, so we can’t refund delivery delays. Some large items are collection only, and the website shows this at the checkout.
- Our choice of courier: we choose the courier for each delivery, and we may use a different one from the one shown at the checkout, for example to keep to your estimated delivery date. In parts of Hull we may use our own local courier. This never changes what you’ve paid.
- Your order is your responsibility once it’s delivered or collected.
- White label (blind) delivery: if you choose it, we send your order without our name or branding.
9. Cancelling
- Because everything we print is made to your own design, the 14-day “cooling off” right to cancel online orders doesn’t apply (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, regulation 28(1)(b)).
- You can cancel an order for a full refund before it goes into production. Because orders go into our automated production queue straight away (see section 3), this is usually only possible while an order is waiting for your artwork or for you to approve a proof. Please contact us as soon as possible. Once production has started, we can’t cancel it.
- Unpaid online orders are cancelled automatically after 60 minutes.
10. If something’s wrong
- Please check your order as soon as you receive or collect it, and before you use it.
- Tell us about any problem within 24 hours of receiving or collecting your order, with clear photos of the items (and the packaging, if it was damaged in delivery). Please keep everything for 30 days, in case we or the courier need to collect it.
- A printing mistake that’s our fault: we’ll reprint it at our cost or give you a refund.
- Once printed items have been used (for example, handed out, displayed or put up at an event), we take it that they were acceptable, and we can’t offer a refund or reprint for them. This is because we can no longer see the problem for ourselves. So if something isn’t right, please don’t use the items: tell us straight away and we’ll put it right as quickly as we can.
- To consider a claim, we may ask you to return the items, unused. We can only refund or reprint items that are returned to us, or that we’ve agreed you don’t need to send back.
- You pay the cost of returning items to us. Please use a tracked service and keep proof of postage, as items are your responsibility until they reach us. You can also bring them back to us in person. If you’re a consumer and we agree the items were faulty because of our mistake, we’ll refund your reasonable cost of returning them, as the law requires.
- We can’t accept returns or give refunds for problems caused by your artwork (for example, low-resolution images, wrong colour settings, missing bleed or spelling mistakes), or for artwork you approved.
- If you’re a consumer, you also have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015: goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. These terms don’t affect those rights.
11. Our liability
- If we are responsible for a problem with your order, the most we’ll pay is the price of that order.
- If you’re a business, we’re not responsible for any indirect loss, or for loss of profit, business or opportunity.
- If you’re a consumer, we only supply our products for private use, and we’re not responsible for business losses.
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn’t allow us to limit.
12. Quotes
Quotes are valid for 30 days unless they say otherwise, and are based on the details you gave us. If the job changes, the price may change too.
13. Your files
The artwork files from a completed order are removed from our website within 10 days of it being completed (we may keep a copy in our own secure office archive, for our records). Please always keep your own copies: to reorder, you’ll need to upload your artwork again.
14. Reviews
Only customers who have bought a product can review it. We may decline to publish reviews that are offensive, unlawful or not about the product.
15. Things outside our control
We’re not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, such as equipment breakdowns, power cuts, severe weather, supplier or courier problems. We’ll tell you as soon as we can, and if the delay is long you can cancel for a refund of anything you’ve paid for work not yet done.
16. Your information
We use your personal information as our Privacy policy explains.
17. The law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If there’s a dispute, we’ll always try to sort it out with you first. If we can’t, it can be dealt with by the courts of England and Wales (and, if you’re a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also use your local courts).
18. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The terms that apply to your order are the ones on this page when you placed it.
